Scale and Clean

Scaling removes the hard tartar which forms on your teeth like scale inside a kettle. You can’t remove it just by brushing your teeth. Scaling also removes trapped food and plaque containing millions of germs, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Stains from coffee, tea, cigarettes or red wine are also cleaned away when your dentist polishes your teeth.

How often you need a scale and clean depends on a few things:

  • How thoroughly you brush and floss each day.
  • How fast you tend to accumulate calculus.
  • How much time your teeth spend in contact with things that will stain them.

Your dental professional should tailor the frequency of your cleans to suit your individual needs. It can vary from every three months to once a year.

What are the benefits?

  • Regular scaling and polishing by a hygienist help keep your teeth and gums healthy by making it easier for you to keep your teeth clean at home. You should see and feel the difference.
  • If your gums bleed when you brush, you may have early gum disease.
  • Regular scaling helps to stop the disease from getting worse.
  • Gum disease can cause bad breath, which you can prevent by regular scaling and cleaning your teeth thoroughly at home.

If you need a filling in a broken or decayed tooth, we’ll fill it with a white resin filling material that is seamlessly bonded to the existing tooth, and colour matched so that it can’t be seen at all.

No more black fillings!

Black fillings are a thing of the past, and there are now many options for durable tooth-coloured restorations. Contrary to what you might have heard, white fillings are just as effective as black or silver ones, but look infinitely better.

Dental Bridges

A bridge is a treatment option to replace your tooth or teeth after they have been lost. The concept of a bridge is to bond new replacement teeth to existing teeth. The healthy teeth are a stable platform to hold a false tooth and ‘bridge the gap’.

Dentures

A denture is an appliance that replaces teeth. You remove it to clean it and it may be replacing all the teeth (full denture) or some of them (partial denture). Many removable dentures rely on some of your remaining natural teeth to help keep them in. Your natural teeth were never designed to help support a denture. In most cases, some minor modification of your natural teeth would be desirable to improve the wearability and life of your denture.

Root Canal Treatment

Teeth can be damaged by decay, fracture or an abscess and cause considerable pain. The root canal is a hollow area in the root of the tooth that houses nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When dental decay reaches the nerve of the tooth, the tooth may die and you may eventually lose the tooth. A root canal treatment restores the tooth, saving it from extraction. It involves cleaning the space the nerve tissue used to occupy and creating a sterile protective seal inside the tooth. At Smile design centre we use the latest technology to give you a painless root canal treatment. We use rotary endodontic motors to clean and shape the root canal system and digital apex locators to establish the length of the tooth roots.

Tooth Crown

Crowns, also known as ‘caps’ are a structurally tried and tested treatment to strengthen the external tooth surface, improving function and appearance. They generally last a long time. A crown is a shell that covers your entire tooth above gum level. It is made from a model made from an impression of your tooth.
